My name is Gavriel Rupert Baluyot Dela Cruz. I am 21 years old from the Philippines. I have three siblings, all of which are older sisters, and I live with Mom and Dad at the moment. In addition, my parents currently have eight grandchildren. I love them all so much! I love basketball and it has been my passion ever since I could remember. I come from Ateneo De Manila University studying BS Information Technology Entrepreneurship. I enjoy gaming on my personal computer and talking about anything under the sun. My favorite movie is “General Luna.” It’s a movie about a hero from history and how he fought for my country’s freedom. I believe that language is very powerful and that the success to learning a new language is to keep speaking it as much as one can without regard for mistakes. I lived in Korea for 18 months and had to learn their native language while teaching them to learn English as a second language. Since then, my appreciation for learning different languages has increased incrementally. Much like people, I realized that each language has its own weaknesses and strengths and it is very challenging to reconcile two of them into one system. But I also believe it is achievable. When we can overcome ourselves and the fear we have of making honest mistakes, we will be able to learn any language, even English, much faster. Because of this, I encourage my students to use English as much as they can outside of class. The 25 minutes in the classroom is when we can learn, correct mistakes, and establish our fundamentals. The time we spend with our friends, family, and other people is the time to apply what we learn and that’s when a language really starts to be a part of us. It will take some time but with patience, hard work, and perseverance, I know it is possible, almost inevitable.
