a motor scooter

a vehicle with two wheels and an engine

3. mudguard /ˈmʌd.ɡɑːrd/

a curved piece of metal or plastic above the wheels of a bicycle or motorcycle that prevents dirt from getting on the rider

4. sedan /səˈdæn/
a car with seats for four or five people, two or four doors, and a separate area in the back for bags, boxes, and suitcases

5. van /væn/
a medium-sized road vehicle, used especially for carrying goods, that often has no windows in the sides at the back

(abbreviation for sport utility vehicle )
a large car with an engine that supplies power to all four wheels

a large road vehicle that is used for transporting large amounts of goods

8. sports car /ˈspɔːrts ˌkɑːr/

a fast, low car, often for two people only

9. convertible /kənˈvɝː.t̬ə.bəl/
a car with a soft roof that can be folded back

10. limousine /ˌlɪm.əˈziːn/
a large, expensive car, often driven by a chauffeur (= a person employed to drive a car for someone else)

11. engine /ˈen.dʒɪn/
a machine that uses the energy from liquid fuel or steam to produce movement

My car’s been having engine trouble recently.

12. spark plug /ˈspɑːrk ˌplʌɡ/
a device in an engine that produces an electrical spark that lights the fuel and makes the engine start

13. chassis /ˈtʃæs.i/
the frame of a vehicle, usually including the wheels and engine, onto which the metal covering is fixed

The car’s lightweight chassis is made from aluminium sheets.

14. windscreen /ˈwɪnd.skriːn/
the window at the front of a car, truck, etc.

15. windscreen wiper /ˈwɪnd.skriːn ˌwaɪ.pɚ/
one of two long metal and rubber parts that move against a windscreen to remove rain

16. bumper /ˈbʌm.pɚ/
a horizontal bar along the lower front and lower back part of a motor vehicle to help protect it if there is an accident

17. hood /hʊd/
the metal cover over the part of a car where the engine is

I looked under the hood and clouds of smoke poured out.

18. trunk /trʌŋk/
a covered space at the back of a car, for storing things in

Stolen goods were found in the trunk of her car.

19. horn /hɔːrn/
a device on a vehicle that is used to make a loud noise as a warning or signal to other people

The driver blew/sounded her horn.

20. accelerator /əkˈsel.ɚ.eɪ.t̬ɚ/

the pedal (= a part that you push with your foot) in a vehicle that makes it go faster

a device in a vehicle that measures and shows the distance it travels

23. brake /breɪk/
a device that makes a vehicle go slower or stop, or a pedal, bar, or handle that makes this device work

All our new models have anti-lock brakes.

24. steering wheel /ˈstɪr.ɪŋ ˌwiːl//
a wheel in a vehicle that the driver turns in order to make the vehicle go in a particular direction

25. wing mirror /ˈwɪŋ ˌmɪr.ɚ/
a mirror on the outside of a car door that allows the driver to see the vehicles that are behind or trying to pass

26. headlight /ˈhed.laɪt/
a large, powerful light at the front of a vehicle, usually one of two

27. sidelight /ˈsaɪd.laɪt/
either of the two smaller lights fixed on the front of a car

28. tail light /ˈteɪl ˌlaɪt/
a red light on the back of a road vehicle that makes it possible for the vehicle to be seen in the dark

29. speedometor /spɪˈdɑː.mə.t̬ɚ/
a device in a vehicle that shows how fast the vehicle is moving

30. clutch /klʌtʃ/
a device that allows turning movement to be sent from one part of a machine to another

I’ve booked the car into the garage because the clutch is slipping.
